Tales from Bates Farms
Welcome to our farm blog, where we share the triumphs, challenges, and everyday adventures of life on Bates Farms. Join our journey as we grow, care for our animals, and contribute to our community.

Our growing farm family
Our farm started in 2024 with a small but mighty crew: 2 goats, 2 pigs, 8 chickens, and 8 ducks. We're thrilled to share how much we've grown! Today, our farm is home to 14 goats, 4 pigs, and a flourishing population of chickens and ducks. We also actively breed our pigs and goats, and diligently incubate duck and chicken eggs to keep our farm thriving. We recently celebrated the arrival of five new baby goats this spring: Turner, Bobby, Chewy, June bug, and Sugar. Follow along as we introduce you to our beloved animals and share their stories.

Life as a farmer: The good, the bad, and the beautiful
For farmers and community members alike, our blog offers an honest look at what it takes to run a full-time farm. We'll share insights into our daily routines, the unexpected challenges we face, and the immense joys that come with working the land and caring for animals. Our goal is to connect with you, whether you're an experienced farmer or simply curious about where your food comes from. We hope to inspire more people to embrace farming and understand the dedication behind providing quality products.

Discovering New Life at the Barn
Today, when we visited the barn, we were greeted by a heartwarming sight. One of our hens, who had been secretly hiding her eggs for months, was proudly sitting on ten new baby chicks nestled under her wings. This particular hen had been elusive, carefully concealing her nest in hopes that we wouldn’t discover her plan to hatch her own little ones. It was a delightful surprise to find her and witness the miracle of new life in our barn. The sight of the fluffy chicks peeking out from under their mother’s feathers was truly a reminder of the wonders of nature and the joys of farm life.
Our Busy Day on the Farm
Today was a busy day on the farm. We spent the morning packaging up two orders that we are getting ready to send out. It’s always satisfying to see our hard work come together as we prepare the products for our customers. Then, this afternoon, we made some cherry blossom soap. The delightful fragrance fills the air, and they smell so good! We can’t wait for everyone to experience the freshness and beauty of our handmade creations.
Our Evening Making Cajeta
Today we spent the evening making cajeta, a delicious caramel-like sauce made from goat's milk. Wow, is it yummy! The rich, sweet flavor and smooth texture make it a perfect treat for drizzling over desserts or enjoying by the spoonful. We can't wait to go to the market to share our yummy treats with our community. It's always a joy to connect with others and share the fruits of our labor. We hope everyone enjoys it as much as we do!
Celebrating Mother's Day with Delicious Treats
Happy Mother's Day! Today was a delightful day spent in the kitchen, where I had the pleasure of making all kinds of goodies. From creamy goat milk fudge to rich caramel and decadent brownies, it was a joy to experiment with these recipes. Using goat milk in our baking has been a fun learning experience, allowing me to discover new flavors and textures. I can't wait to try more things with goat milk in the future!
